Introduced on January 7, 2025 by Charles Ellis Schumer
Passed/agreed to in Senate: Submitted in the Senate, considered, and agreed to without amendment by Unanimous Consent.
This resolution sets which senators from the minority party will serve on key Senate committees. It does not change any laws or programs. It simply decides who sits on committees that handle topics like farming, the budget, health care, veterans’ issues, national security, and more. The committees listed include Agriculture; Appropriations; Armed Services; Banking and Housing; Budget; Commerce and Transportation; Energy; Environment; Finance; Foreign Relations; Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions; Homeland Security; Indian Affairs; Judiciary; Rules; Small Business; Veterans’ Affairs; the Joint Economic Committee; the Ethics Committee; the Intelligence Committee; and the Special Committee on Aging, among others . These assignments last until new members are chosen .
Why this matters: committees do most of the Senate’s detailed work. Setting minority membership makes sure both parties review bills, question witnesses, and oversee federal agencies on everyday issues like schools, hospitals, roads, and public safety .
