Read twice and referred to the Committee on Foreign Relations.
This bill aims to help countries in Latin America and the Caribbean that keep formal ties with Taiwan. It pushes back against pressure from the People’s Republic of China to make these countries cut those ties, and it encourages the U.S. to work more closely with Taiwan on development and economic projects in the region . It tells the State Department to set up a system to track risky or opaque China-backed infrastructure deals in those countries and to coordinate responses and share information with allies .
The bill also requires regular updates. The State Department must report every six months on any country moving to drop Taiwan, quickly outline a plan if that happens, and provide a yearly report for five years on China’s goals and pressure tactics, plus what the U.S. did to support Taiwan’s partners. Reports start 180 days after the law takes effect. The U.S. should also boost joint programs, align public messaging, and encourage teamwork between U.S. embassies and Taiwan’s offices in the region .
