Referred to the Committee on Veterans' Affairs, and in addition to the Committee on the Judiciary, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
This bill focuses on veterans who were reported to the federal background check system for guns only because the VA decided they needed help managing their benefits or labeled them mentally incompetent. It tells the VA to notify the Attorney General that those past reports were improper or no longer apply. It also says a VA decision like this, by itself, cannot be used to treat someone as banned from buying or owning a firearm or ammunition. In short, it aims to prevent automatic loss of gun rights based only on VA benefit-related decisions, and to correct past records based on those decisions.
