Mr. VAN EPPS. Mr. Speaker, I rise today to honor and pay tribute to a remarkable hero from Houston County, Tennessee, who answered the call of duty during a critical period in our Nation's history. As the years pass, the profound debt we owe to our Korean War veterans only grows.
Of the 6.8 million Americans who served during the Korean War era, fewer than 300,000 remain with us today. This generation, now largely in their nineties, represents a rapidly dwindling connection to a pivotal struggle for global freedom. It is our sacred obligation to ensure their stories are told and their sacrifices are never forgotten.
extraordinary service, sacrifice, and lifelong dedication of Joe L. Thomas, Sr. He represents the very best of Tennessee's Volunteer Spirit and the enduring resilience of the American servicemember.
Mr. Joe L. Thomas, Sr., served honorably in the United States Air Force from October 29, 1954, through September 10, 1957. During his military service, he was assigned to the 3914th Air Base Squadron. Local historical accounts and newspaper records from 1954 and 1955 proudly document his service during the pivotal final years of the Korean War era.
Like so many members of his generation, Mr. Thomas quietly went wherever his country needed him, performing his duties with professionalism, skill, and quiet resolve. His willingness to serve during a critical period in our Nation's history helped preserve the peace secured through the sacrifices of those who fought in Korea. We honor his service today, remembering that the freedoms we enjoy were secured by men like Mr. Thomas who answered their country's call without hesitation.
