Establishes an initiative under the Secretary of Energy to encourage states to enhance nuclear science and technology information dissemination at certain schools.
Encourages states to work with higher education institutions to incorporate relevant degrees for the nuclear energy industry, including environmental science, various engineering disciplines, radiochemistry, applied physics, materials science, and occupational safety and health.
Promotes engagement between schools and local nuclear power plants for student tours and outreach by nuclear stakeholders about professional opportunities in the industry, including internships and apprenticeships.
Aims to carry out the initiative in conjunction with the Department of Energy’s Nuclear Energy University Program.
Considers the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations Uniform Curriculum Program Guide in the initiative’s establishment and execution.
Establishes a mentorship program to pair industry volunteers with students for mentorship, including virtual opportunities, with pairing based on career interest, location, or other appropriate considerations.
Encourages states to work with higher education institutions that have research and test reactors on campus to use these for student career preparation in the nuclear workforce and to inform the student body about nuclear energy.
Defines “covered school” as an institution of higher education or secondary school near a nuclear power plant, reactor developer headquarters, or any other school deemed appropriate by the Secretary of Energy.
Utilizes existing definitions for “institution of higher education,” “research and test reactor,” and “secondary school” from relevant acts and amendments.
