Establishes a Commission to Study the Potential Creation of a National Museum of Italian American History and Culture.
Commission consists of 8 members appointed by congressional leaders from both parties.
Members must have expertise in Italian American history, museum administration, fundraising, or related fields.
Initial appointments to be made within 90 days of enactment.
Commission is responsible for submitting reports to the President and Congress on the feasibility of the museum, including:
- Availability and cost of collections.
- Impact on existing Italian American museums.
- Criteria for evaluating potential locations.
- Feasibility of integrating with the Smithsonian Institution.
- Governance and organizational structure.
- Best practices for community engagement.
- Cost estimates for construction, operation, and maintenance.
Reports are due 18 months after the first meeting of the Commission.
Develops a fundraising plan to support the museum without federal funding.
Conducts an independent review of the fundraising plan’s viability.
May convene a national conference on Italian American culture within 18 months.
Members serve without pay but can receive travel expenses.
Commission can accept donations to support its work.
Terminates 30 days after submitting final reports.
No federal funds are to be used for the Commission’s activities.
