Johnson was a fourth-generation South Dakotan, born in Canton and raised in Vermillion.
He was a distinguished athlete in high school, holding a record for the most touchdowns in a single season.
Johnson earned multiple degrees from the University of South Dakota, including a bachelor’s, master’s, and juris doctor.
He began his political career in 1978 and became the longest-serving public official in South Dakota history, serving in various legislative roles until his retirement in 2015.
He chaired the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs from 2011 to 2015.
Johnson was honored by the Lakota people with the name “Wacante Ognake,” meaning “holds the people in his heart.”
Despite suffering a life-threatening brain aneurysm in 2006, he returned to work, learned to write with his left hand, and won re-election in 2008.
He was known for his strong work ethic and commitment to serving the people of South Dakota.
Johnson is survived by his wife, three children, and eight grandchildren.
