Outdoor Afro began in 2009 as a blog by Rue Mapp and has evolved into a national not-for-profit network.
The organization has volunteer leaders in 33 states and the District of Columbia, hosting hundreds of outdoor events annually.
Its mission is to celebrate and inspire Black-American connections to nature through various recreational activities.
Over the past 15 years, Outdoor Afro has trained more than 1,000 outdoor leaders and engaged over 150,000 participants.
The organization challenges the misconception that Black Americans lack a relationship with nature and promotes access to both remote and urban natural spaces.
Outdoor Afro encourages a healthy lifestyle, community healing, and a connection to Black history in natural areas.
In 2018, Outdoor Afro organized its first international expedition to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro.
The “Making Waves” program was launched to address the high drowning rates among Black children by providing water safety and swimming lessons.
The program has funded nearly 1,950 “Swimmership” scholarships and aims to reach 1,500 new swimmers in 2024.
Outdoor Afro utilizes digital outreach to engage millions and change perceptions of who can connect with nature.
The network includes engaged individuals who plan outdoor activities for children and seniors, restoring Black-American leadership in outdoor spaces.
Outdoor Afro serves as a key resource for the Black-American community regarding outdoor recreation, gear, and environmental issues.
