Acknowledges the critical services provided by plants and wildlife, including health, cultural, economic, recreational, and spiritual benefits.
Recognizes that over 2,300 species are at risk of extinction globally, with many more experiencing population declines.
Highlights the current biodiversity crisis, often referred to as the sixth mass extinction, largely driven by human activities.
Identifies climate change, large-scale land use changes, and habitat destruction as existential threats to species.
Emphasizes the role of the Endangered Species Act of 1973 and other conservation laws in preventing the extinction of over 99 percent of listed species, citing the California condor, whooping crane, and black-footed ferret as success stories.
Notes the significant cultural and subsistence values of many at-risk species to Tribal, indigenous, and Native Alaskan communities, and the importance of their involvement in conservation efforts.
