Referred to the Committee on Armed Services, and in addition to the Committee on Natural Resources, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
This bill calls for three public plaques to honor the Downwinder communities of New Mexico—people who suffered health problems, like cancer and infertility, after radioactive fallout from the first atomic bomb test in 1945. It tells the Army, the Air Force, and the Department of the Interior to create and place these plaques within one year of the law taking effect.
The plaques would be installed at White Sands Missile Range, Holloman Air Force Base, and White Sands National Park. This is a symbolic tribute meant to recognize the harm these communities endured and to inform visitors at these public sites.
