This bill would let the Pines Foundation build and maintain a Fire Island AIDS Memorial at Fire Island National Seashore. The memorial’s goal is to honor residents of Fire Island Pines and Cherry Grove who suffered or died from AIDS and to teach future generations about the epidemic’s impact on these communities. No federal money could be used to design, install, or maintain it, though the National Park Service could accept private donations to support those activities. The Park Service could allow the memorial along the walkway between Fire Island Pines and Cherry Grove, near the Carrington House, and would have final say over the design .
