The pilot, run by the Defense Innovation Unit under the Hybrid Space Architecture initiative, must begin within one year and will assess utility, resilience, latency, security, interoperability with DoD systems, protections against kinetic/non-kinetic/cyber threats, and transition paths to sustained programs of record. The Secretary of Defense may conduct real-world demonstrations and limited operational use, require strong cybersecurity and risk-management for classified data, and encourage competition from nontraditional and commercial space providers to evaluate hybrid space infrastructure across multiple vendors.
