Received in the House.
This measure would block a recent FCC rule that let schools and libraries use E‑Rate funds to buy discounted Wi‑Fi hotspots and mobile data for students, staff, and library patrons to use off‑site, like at home. The FCC rule also required “acceptable use” policies so the hotspots were used mainly for schoolwork. The resolution would cancel that rule, which was published on August 20, 2024.
In plain terms, if this passes, schools and libraries would no longer be able to use E‑Rate discounts to send hotspots home with students or patrons. This could limit options to help people get online after school or outside the library.
