Proposal to Add Maritime Paramedic to U.S. Coast Guard Medical Roles

Offshore paramedics serve as critical medical providers on vessels, often delivering advanced emergency care in remote and high-risk environments. Despite their training and responsibilities, there is currently no classification under 46 CFR 11.807 that formally recognizes the role of civilian offshore medics. This proposal advocates for the creation of a new designation titled Maritime Paramedic within the Medical Technician section of the U.S. Coast Guard’s credentialing standards. The recommended qualifications include two years as a state-licensed paramedic, current NREMT certification, advanced trauma and cardiac life support training, and one year of experience aboard a USCG-compliant vessel. Recognizing Maritime Paramedics would enhance maritime medical readiness, improve crew safety, and align credentialing with current industry practices.
