This bill tells the State Department to create a public 5-year plan—updated once after five years—to use major sports events in the U.S. to build global friendships, promote American culture, and support economic ties. The plan must include partnerships with host cities, community groups, athletes, the sports industry, and artists; clear goals and ways to measure success; and steps to speed up visas for athletes, their families, support staff, and eligible international visitors. The plan must be posted online. For 2024–2034, this covers events like the Copa America, Club World Cup, FIFA World Cup, Summer and Winter Olympics and Paralympics, and the Men’s and Women’s Rugby World Cups.
The bill also renames and strengthens an Office of Sports Diplomacy to run these efforts, work with local tourism and trade offices, and highlight American arts, film, and music for visitors. It adds at least three full-time staff through 2034 and requires yearly progress reports until the end of 2034.
