Stops burial and memorialization in national cemeteries (including Arlington) for people who committed Federal or State capital crimes. Requires officials to take reasonable steps, such as checking public records, to confirm eligibility before burial so ineligible remains are not interred. Directs the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to disinter the remains of George E. Siple from Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, notify his next‑of‑kin, and return the remains to them or arrange another appropriate disposition if they are unavailable. Also updates a related cross‑reference in existing law. No new funding is provided.
Amend 38 U.S.C. 2411(a)(2) by replacing the phrase "In the case" with "(A) Except as provided by subparagraph (B), in the case". This creates a new subparagraph structure with an (A).
Add a new subparagraph (B) to 38 U.S.C. 2411(a)(2) requiring the appropriate Federal official to take every reasonable action, including searching public records, to ensure that a person to be interred in a National Cemetery Administration cemetery or Arlington National Cemetery is not ineligible for interment under this section.
Amend Section 2(c) of the Alicia Dawn Koehl Respect for National Cemeteries Act by striking the words "this section" and inserting "subsection (a)", thereby changing the statutory cross-reference.
Section 2(c) of the Alicia Dawn Koehl Respect for National Cemeteries Act is further amended by inserting additional text after a specified point (the inserted text is not shown in the provided excerpt).
The Secretary of Veterans Affairs must disinter the remains of George E. Siple from Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
