Read twice and referred to the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.
This bill would require commercial truck and bus drivers to show they can use English for key parts of the job. Two years after it becomes law, the knowledge test for a commercial driver’s license could only be given in English, and people would have to show they can read traffic signs in English, talk with officers at stops and checkpoints, and give and get directions in English to pass and be certified to drive a commercial vehicle . The Department of Transportation would also need to update its rules to put these changes in place within two years .
Supporters say this aims to improve safety during traffic stops, inspections, and emergencies by making sure drivers and officials can communicate quickly and clearly. People who currently rely on tests in other languages would need to prepare for an English-only test and show basic English skills to qualify .
