Adds maple syrup to the list of foods that seniors can buy with benefits from the Seniors Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program. The change simply expands the eligible food items to include maple syrup alongside herbs and other covered products.
Amend Section 4402(b)(1) of the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002 by striking the words "and herbs" and inserting the words "herbs, and maple syrup."
Primary beneficiaries are low-income seniors who receive farmers’ market nutrition benefits — they gain an additional eligible food choice (maple syrup). Producers and vendors who make or sell maple syrup (small farmers, sugarmakers, and farmers’ markets) may see modest increases in demand because they can accept program vouchers for maple syrup. USDA and state/tribal/local program administrators must update eligible-item lists and vendor guidance, a routine administrative task with minimal burden. There is no direct change to benefit amounts or eligibility, so effects on program costs are likely small and depend on uptake. Overall community food access and small producer revenue could see modest positive effects, especially in regions with local maple syrup production.
