Creates a voluntary pilot program to connect real-time wildfire hazard alerts with State and local road-closure and traveler information systems so drivers get better, faster notifications during wildfires. The Secretary of Transportation will run the pilot with NOAA and the Forest Service, require use of existing data standards, allow States to tailor integrations to their systems, and report on effectiveness within two years.
The pilot may use existing surface transportation R&D funds and is explicitly voluntary for States (no uniform system mandate). It focuses on technical integration, data standards, and evaluating whether linking alert feeds to roadway/traveler systems improves traveler safety and situational awareness during wildfire events.
Read twice and referred to the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.
