This proposal would make bird flu (highly pathogenic avian influenza) a top research focus for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It lets the agency give grants to land‑grant colleges and universities to improve poultry vaccines and strengthen on‑farm safety steps. The goal is to protect chickens, turkeys, and other poultry, and reduce the risk of outbreaks that can harm farmers and raise food prices.
Grant-funded work could include testing how well vaccines work across different poultry species, improving vaccine formulas and delivery, studying how vaccination might affect U.S. and international poultry markets, and boosting biosecurity, such as training, farm-level practices, and new disinfection methods.
