Creates a new federal grant program so primary care offices can add self-harm and suicide prevention services. The Secretary of Health and Human Services, through the Assistant Secretary for Mental Health and Substance Use, can award a limited number of grants with capped dollar amounts.
Grantees must hire clinical social workers, use new national screening standards to check patients for self-harm and suicide risk, offer short‑term help in the clinic, and connect patients to longer‑term care when needed. The Secretary will set the screening standards, issue application and reporting rules, and provide a report on program results.
