Introduced on March 31, 2025 by Christopher Henry Smith
Referred to the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, and in addition to the Committee on Foreign Affairs, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
This bill would give a ceremonial name to part of 18th Street NW in Washington, DC. The stretch between Church St NW and P St NW would be called “Jimmy Lai Way,” and the building at 1520 18th St NW would get a new address: 1 Jimmy Lai Way NW. The General Services Administration would put up street signs with the new name at nearby corners and the closest federal property. It also says the Postal Service should accept mail addressed to the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office at “1 Jimmy Lai Way” and deliver it to the offices’ actual locations in San Francisco and New York.
The bill also speaks out against the jailing of Jimmy Lai in Hong Kong. It calls for his immediate release, urges U.S. officials to press his case, and encourages using existing U.S. sanction tools against officials involved. It asks the United Nations and U.K. to push for his freedom and for protection of free speech and a free press.
