This bill updates the rules for “undetectable” guns. It replaces old metal detector and x-ray test language with clearer standards about what parts of a gun must be detectable. It aims to make sure a firearm can be found by common security tools by requiring certain parts to have detectable material, instead of relying on an older test model from the 1980s.
The bill also defines key parts of a gun and what “detectable material” means. “Major components” include the slide or cylinder, or the frame or receiver, and for rifles and shotguns it also includes the barrel. “Detectable material” is set by a magnetic strength equal to 3.7 ounces of a specific stainless steel. It keeps exceptions for firearms used by the U.S. government and for licensed makers or importers working under a current U.S. government contract.
