Expands the eligible foods in the Seniors Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program to include tree nuts, explicitly allowing both unshelled and shelled tree nuts. This is a narrow change to the program’s food list and does not add funding, set new dates, or alter administration. It simply broadens what seniors can purchase through the program to include tree nuts.
Amend Section 4402(b)(1) of the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002 by striking "and herbs" and inserting "herbs, and tree nuts (including shelled tree nuts)".
Explicitly adds tree nuts (including shelled tree nuts) to the list of foods named in Section 4402(b)(1) alongside herbs.
Primary beneficiaries are seniors who use the program, who will have more eligible food choices by being able to use benefits for tree nuts, including shelled nuts. Farmers and specialty crop growers who produce tree nuts may see modest new demand as their products become eligible. Market and farm-stand vendors can add eligible nut products without new compliance burdens, as the change simply expands the approved foods list. The amendment does not impose costs on states or localities and requires no new administrative systems beyond updating program materials to reflect the expanded eligibility.
