Read twice and referred to the Committee on the Judiciary.
This bill makes all fentanyl-like drugs illegal by putting them in the strictest drug category under federal law, permanently. That means any substance that is similar in structure to fentanyl—current or future versions—would be treated the same way, with strong controls and penalties and no accepted medical use under this law. It replaces a temporary rule that is set to expire on March 31, 2025, with a permanent one, so there isn’t a gap in enforcement. The change takes effect one day after the bill becomes law .
The goal is to crack down on the fast-changing drugs that fuel overdoses. Police and prosecutors could act more quickly against makers and sellers of new fentanyl copies. Because these drugs are in the strictest category, research and medical use would remain very limited unless exceptions are made by law or regulation .
