Lets a need for occupational therapy qualify a Medicare patient for home health services. Today, patients usually must first need skilled nursing, physical therapy, or speech therapy to qualify. This change puts occupational therapy on equal footing.
The update applies to services on or after January 1, 2026. It does not create new programs or funding. It simply changes the eligibility rules so more patients who primarily need occupational therapy can receive home health care at home.
Referred to the Committee on Ways and Means, and in addition to the Committee on Energy and Commerce, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
