Prevents the Secretary of the Navy from renaming any naval vessel that, on the date this Act becomes law, is named for Cesar Chavez, Medgar Evers, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Dolores Huerta, Thurgood Marshall, Harvey Milk, Lucy Stone, or Harriet Tubman. The prohibition applies despite the general renaming authority in federal law, making these specific ship names permanently protected from change while the law remains in effect.
The Secretary of the Navy may not change the name of any naval vessel that, as of the date of the enactment of this Act, is named after an individual listed in subsection (b).
Defines the individuals whose names on naval vessels are protected: Cesar Chavez; Medgar Evers; Ruth Bader Ginsburg; Dolores Huerta; Thurgood Marshall; Harvey Milk; Lucy Stone; Harriet Tubman.
Primary affected parties:
Limited practical burden: The measure imposes no funding, operational, or programmatic requirements on agencies or state/local governments. Its direct administrative impact is narrowly confined to one decision area (naval vessel naming) within the Navy’s responsibilities.
Referred to the House Committee on Armed Services.
