This bill would require federal immigration authorities to detain certain non‑U.S. nationals who are in the country unlawfully and are linked to a crime that caused someone’s death or serious bodily injury. It directs the government to hold these individuals if they are charged, arrested, convicted, or admit to the acts behind such a crime, and to issue a detainer and take custody if they aren’t already held by other officials .
The bill also requires the government to keep victims and, if the victim has died, close family members informed. They must receive the person’s name and nationality, immigration status, criminal history, custody status and changes, and what the government is doing to remove the person from the United States. It says these rules do not reduce any rights victims have under other laws.
