This bill lets Medicare pay pharmacists for certain basic services, like testing and treating common infections (COVID-19, flu, RSV, and strep throat). It also allows pharmacist services during a declared public health emergency, as long as they follow state rules and work with doctors when state law requires it . The bill bans “balance billing” for these pharmacist services, so people on Medicare won’t get extra surprise charges beyond what Medicare allows .
These changes start January 1, 2026. The goal is to make care easier to get at local pharmacies for quick testing and treatment needs, especially during outbreaks or emergencies .
