This bill says the USDA cannot make changes to the Thrifty Food Plan if those changes would lead to more people going hungry. The Thrifty Food Plan is the government’s estimate of the cost of a basic, healthy diet. It helps set the maximum SNAP (food stamp) benefits. USDA updates it for food prices each year and does a deeper review every five years. Under this bill, any update or review that would increase food insecurity—meaning more households can’t get enough food—would not be allowed. The official goal is to block any Thrifty Food Plan update or reevaluation that would increase food insecurity.
